Breaking down the Project: Why Thrift?
"Thrifting refers to the act of shopping at a thrift store, flea market, garage sale, or a shop of a charitable organization, usually with the intent of finding interesting items at a cheap price.
A larger philosophy permeates the act of thrifting which celebrates the recycling of formerly-owned items, finding new use and new love for vintage material goods which had been thrown out, and the thrill of imagining what the former life of the item was like."
Thrifting: it's a word that not many people understand or know. It's also a word that very many people know well. It's a controversial word, and exciting word, an unexplained word. I would like to break down what thrifting means and why I chose a thrifting platform for my project.
I have always thrifted: bought second hand. It's affordable, sustainable and allows me to find things I wouldn't normally find. It's also an amazing outlet for me to find the quirky and unusual pieces of clothing that are synonymous with me. I think I was meant to be born in the 50's with a 70's fashion sense. I buy most of my clothes and homeware second hand, and I know this can be met with eye-rolls and judgement, but it is also so inspiring and exciting to think of how thrifting has grown in the past 5 years. People are actively seeking affordability, sustainability and expression, and thrifting provides that.
I therefore want to create a space that accommodates for the thrifting lifestyle. A fictional space of course...I'm still only a student. But I want to make people aware of the money-saving aspects of thrifting; the excitement of finding unique things; and the humour at finding that one inappropriate mug because all thrift stores have them...I know you know which one I mean. Aren't thrift stores excitingly quirky?
Jokes aside, I truly believe that thrifting uplifts people and the products sold; it gives them new life and purpose. "The beauty of something broken is that it can be fixed, and therein lies its' potential"...and yes that is a quote from Scooby Doo. To thrift is the ultimate form of recycling. Thrifting brings back eras. Thrifting saves you money. It formulates expression, creates a fun experience, creates restoration opportunities, and gives things new life.
Bottom line: thrift more. The benefits far outweigh the downfalls. Second-hand is beautiful, unique AND cheap....what could be better?
Stay positive and hopeful
