Theoretical backing part 01: Retail design

A large part of the year includes backing up our designs and the process thereof using theoretical studies, which automatically means a lot of document typing. We had to select three theories off of which to base our design decisions, and in order to keep you up to date and on board with the design decisions, I will retype my current 100 page document into a short and to-the-point post...or at least I'll try...

A main theory which I will use this year is retail design theory. Seems pretty straight forward but I will break it down. Simply, retail design theory discusses how to design retail spaces in an effective way for the intended clients. It involves branding, store layout, product selection and a whole lot of other common yet useful theories.  Retail design theory is an important theory to implement into my design - I mean, I am designing a store after all - and the success of its integration is very important to the success of my project. Although retail design is a commonly used and known theory, I intend to study its many facets fully in order to truly understand retail spaces, how people use them and what makes them successful. And, of course, how to design in order to make them money.

There are very very many papers and textbooks and websites which you can look at if you want an in-depth 100 page version of this blog post, but for now I will leave you with theory one - retail design - and add short explanations in my design posts as to how it links to my decisions and designs.

Follow my posts for theory two, coming soon...
