Theoretical backing part 03: Sustainable design

Sustainability is a topic very close to my heart, especially as a designer. I am appalled and terrified at the destruction that the construction industry has on the state of the earth, and I very much believe that through conscious and considerate design decisions, the impact on the environment can be drastically reduced. Therefore, sustainable design is a large consideration and topic of study for this year's project. From choosing the correct materials, sourcing those materials wisely and considering maintenance techniques, sustainable design ensures that interior design does not adversely affect the environment any more than needed.

Sustainable design is probably the most difficult aspect to bring into a design, as it is the most visible out of all the theories I have chose - ie: everyone will be able to see if it's incorrectly implemented. And since the sustainability has to be able to be sustained after the construction phase and into the maintenance and demolition stages, this theory becomes even more difficult to introduce successfully. However, it is also one of the theories with the most possible benefits.

Stay tuned to see the theories being implemented into the design, hopefully in a successful and seamless manner. Let's hope I do the earth justice...
