3D's: The fashion design office
The open office area for the fashion designers has been created bearing all related theories in mind. Social design theory has been implemented through the desk designs; the desk is fully adjustable with a moveable centre portion which can slide in and out to allow for additional circulation space or desk space, as seen in figure 5. Additionally, a high tray has been designed to fit over the desk and move to the desired location in order for items such as scissors and pins to be placed away from the fabric being worked with. The storage unit behind the desk has also been designed in such a way as to allow or the storage of a variety of items, such as fabric, thread, and patterns, amongst others, thus allowing the designer to store their necessary items. Access to the space is granted by the use of a ramp as well as stairs, allowing for inclusivity of design and ease of use within the space.
The space also integrates retail design theory through the repetitive use of materials and uses the pattern designed for the fashion designers, being the central sunflower element, as inspiration for the circular storage until. Therefore, branding is allowed to come through even in the storage designs. The sunflower concept additionally comes through in the ceiling design where a starched fabric bulkhead has been integrated to allow for subtle wayfinding along the ramp, as well as an aesthetic feature.
Collaboration is also an element which has been considered in the space’s design as it links with social design theory and the comfort and understanding of people and spaces. Therefore, the desks and workspaces designed allow for designers to work as a cohesive unit, or as individuals. The computer station similarly allows access to networks, programs and interaction which the designers would otherwise not have access to.
