Heritage vs New: The design dilemma
How beautiful wasn't my building when it was first built? What I really love is how the details and windows were so well preserved that the façade is still recognisable. However, with beauty comes dilemmas and strategic decision-making: what do I keep and what do I change? Do I change anything? And if so, do I make it look totally new or similar to the rest of the building?
I love heritage buildings (hence choosing to use one) and therefore in my heart I just want to preserve everything. However, for design reasons, some interior spaces will have to change. Finding the right balance between what to keep and what to demolish is so important and one of the main challenges of my design.
I have subsequently decided to take an approach where I take out as little as possible, add temporary elements to the interior and stylistically replicate the rest of the existing building with new additions. In this way, my design can come through, and I'm respecting the original building and its style. Hopefully, I do this beautiful building justice...
